Tesla's Electric Car Technology No Longer Uses Radar, This Is Instead

Tesla will no longer use radar electric car technology on the Model 3 and Model Y in the United States starting in May 2021. According to reports from Car And Driver and InsideEVs, Tesla is no longer using a forward facing radar system to support Autopilot performance. Instead, Tesla Autopilot will rely on the Tesla Vision system that uses a camera system and neural net processing. Since the beginning of the year, Tesla has put its trust in its vision-only Autopilot system to achieve full autonomy. According to Tesla, the manufacturer's AI-based software relies more on cameras so that radar is no longer needed. Tesla Autopilot Tesla Autopilot

Tesla Autopilot uses eight camera systems which are located behind the windshield, side and rear side of the car. The camera system is used to monitor traffic around the car as well as read road markings.Until May 2021, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Autopilots still use radar to help cameras detect vehicles in front.
Well, during this transition from radar to camera, there are some Autopilot Model 3 and Model Y features whose performance is limited. The first is the Autosteer capability which is limited to a maximum speed of 120 km/h and with a longer minimum following distance.

In addition, the Smart Summon and Emergency Lane Departure Avoidance features will also be temporarily locked. Later these features will be unlocked through software updates issued over-the-air. Tesla has just applied the Tesla Vision system to the Model 3 and Model Y in the United States only. Tesla Model S, Model X, and all cars not made in the United States will still use forward facing radar.
