Suzuki is widely rumored to be withdrawing from MotoGP after the 2022 season. Following is the chronology of Suzuki reportedly leaving MotoGP.
Suzuki is one of the factory teams that achieved quite impressive achievements in MotoGP. Even the Japanese team successfully won the 2020 MotoGP world title through Joan Mir.
The achievements of Suzuki, who made a comeback to MotoGP in 2015, made the Hamamatsu-based team decide to extend their commitment contract with Dorna Sports until MotoGP
The signing of the contract between Suzuki and Dorna was carried out in April 2021. Suzuki then recruited Livio Suppo as team manager to replace Davide Brivio's position for the 2022 MotoGP.
Until after the 2022 Spanish MotoGP which took place at the Jerez Circuit, Sunday (1/5), there were no signs that Suzuki would leave MotoGP. Even two weeks ago Suppo stated that Suzuki would extend the contracts of Joan Mir and Alex Rins, two Suzuki riders whose contracts expire at the end of the 2022 season.
But then rumors of Suzuki pulling out of MotoGP emerged after the test that took place at the Jerez Circuit, Monday (2/5). Suzuki, reportedly Motorsport, has informed Dorna Sports that they will leave MotoGP after the 2022 season.
A number of major European media, such as Marca, AS, and Speedweek later confirmed that Suzuki would withdraw from MotoGP at the end of this season after receiving statements from sources within Dorna and Suzuki.
Suzuki has informed the entire crew and team mechanics regarding the decision to withdraw from MotoGP. Suzuki will reportedly issue an official statement regarding the decision to leave MotoGP today, Tuesday (3/5).
The financial crisis that hit the Japanese manufacturer was the reason Suzuki left MotoGP at the end of this season. Moreover, Suzuki has never had a major main sponsor since returning to MotoGP in 2015.
This is the second time Suzuki has left MotoGP after the 2011 season ended. At that time, Suzuki also pulled out of MotoGP due to the financial crisis.
